Easy Summer Makeup Looks

From graphic eyeliner and bold lips to festival-worthy glitter and even bleached brows, the SS19 catwalks were riddled with creativity. Whilst summer does offer the opportunity to experiment a little more with your makeup, there is also a desire for looks to be wearable and easy to recreate. Here are four looks which can be mastered in minutes…

Double Blush

Think pink when it comes to this ultra feminine look and experiment with flushed shades on the cheeks, eyes and lips. If you’re short on packing space for your upcoming summer escapades, fear not as your blusher can easily double up as the perfect eyeshadow. “The key to doing this is to use a formula which is buildable – something like Tom Ford’s Sheer Cheek Duo which gives either a sheer or medium coverage as desired,” says Space NK’s Pro Artist, Arif Khan.

After using the Space NK 203 Brush to swipe blusher over the apples of the cheeks, Arif then suggests using the 302 Brush to lightly dust your eyelids for a soft wash of colour. For those seeking more definition, try applying just in the crease. For lips opt for a hydrating balm with a subtle tint like Caudalie’s French Kiss Lip Balm in Innocence.

Put down the black eyeliner and play with something bolder for summer like cobalt blues and emerald greens. Although coloured liners may initially seem daunting, they work wonders for making your eyes pop and they take just seconds to apply. “Sisley’s Phyto-Khol Star Waterproof Pencils are great for intense colour and long-wear as their pigments are strong and easily buildable,” says makeup artist Zoë Taylor, who advises applying liberally on to your upper lash line and blending with your ring finger or a fluffy brush.

“Even though this is a waterproof product, there is still a little bit of time for you to move it around before it sets.” Don’t be afraid of imperfect application as a slightly smudged line is less intense. Pro tip? “Avoid trying a new makeup look just before an event. Practice them in advance until you get the desired look,” says Arif.

Sun-kissed Shades

It’s safe to say everyone looks healthier with a dash of bronzer to help warm the complexion, however this summer try creating a smoky golden eye with it too. Choosing a bronzer with more than one shade will help you to create a multi-tonal look. Those with a slight shimmer will also give a more natural finish that doesn’t look ‘muddy’.

“The finely-milled pigments in our Kevyn Aucoin Neo-Bronzer make it an ideal, all-over eye colour which can also be blended through the crease as a transitional colour for a more dramatic eye thanks to the gradient of shades in satin, pearl and matte finishes,” says Nick Lujan, Kevyn Aucoin’s Global Director of Artistry & Education.

Natural Glow

‘No makeup makeup’ is a guaranteed trend at most fashion weeks and this season was no exception. Models at Victoria Beckham, Pamella Roland, Tory Burch and Balmain all favoured the fresh-faced, pared-back look, but while it’s all about forgoing your foundation and embracing your own skin, sometimes we all need a little help. Primers, tinted moisturisers and BB or CC creams are best for this since they help to even out  the skin, yet they still allow your natural complexion to shine through.

What’s more – these formulas are often enriched with kind-to-skin ingredients and are more lightweight making them suitable for the warmer months. “By Terry’s Cellularose Brightening CC Serum acts just like an Instagram filter to add radiance, reduce redness and blur imperfections making it ideal for recreating this ‘no makeup’ look,” says Darren Buswell, Lead Artist at By Terry. Arif’s top tip is to always apply using your fingers since they warm the product and allow you to build coverage without it looking cakey. Finish with a light dusting of powder. For those having a good skin day, simply dot concealer where necessary.
