Achieving Effortlessly Undone Hair

Undone Hair

While sophisticated updos and ultra-glam sleek locks are perfect for special occasions, sometimes you just want something a little less… done. We reveal how to achieve effortlessly undone hair that’ll be the envy of all your friends…

The Prep Step

Ironically, undone hair actually requires more prep than overly styled looks. Creating an aesthetic that is chic and cool yet seemingly effortless begins with enviable texture – and this starts in the shower. We recommend using a shampoo that concentrates on cleansing the hair while adding just the right amount of nonchalance. The IGK Hair 1995 2-in-1 Shampoo & Texturizer does just that; containing bentonite clay the formula is designed to leave locks with a flexible grit.

Likewise, Bumble & Bumble’s Surf Shampoo leaves a lovely, undone, beachy effect post-wash. Finish your shower cycle with a light conditioner that will nourish the ends but not weigh down or flatten the roots. “Apply conditioner only on the lengths of the hair, and comb it through starting from the ends, moving up,” says Valentina Ingrosso, Top Stylist at Windle & Moodie. We like Christophe Robin’s Conditioner With Rose Extracts, which is super light but brilliantly nourishing.

Post-Shower Plans

After stepping out of the shower, picking a drying technique is your next dilemma. For hair that is fairly manageable, air drying is the best way to achieve easy texture and shape. Opt for an AQUIS Hair Turban Lisse Luxe post-wash; these clever towels cut hair drying time by 50%, and protect the hair cuticle with a unique fibre called AQUITEX. Leave your hair to dry in the towel for at least 15 minutes before gently removing it and brushing through with a Tangle Teezer. Next, apply an air dry-friendly product, such as IGK Hair’s beautiful Rich Kid Coconut Oil Air-Dry Styler, which leaves hair ultra-soft and smelling delicious.

If you have hair on the thicker, frizzier side, sometimes heat is necessary. Use an effective yet gentle hairdryer such as the ones by T3, and use a good all-rounder blow dry cream like Bumble & Bumble’s All Style Blow Dry. Begin by rough drying hair and use fingers to add tousle and texture as you go. Try drying the back portion of your hair upside down for extra volume. Finish by spraying in Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray and apply a small amount of Windle & Moodie Invisible Day & Night Cream, which tames any areas of frizz without weighing hair down.

Low Key Styling

If you’re lucky enough to have hair that does what you tell it to, a simple rough dry and application of products could suffice for perfectly imperfect locks. For most of us though, a little more effort is required. One of our favourite ways to achieve a beautifully undone look is to loosely plait hair (either in one plait or in sections) when hair is around 80% dry. Leave to dry fully for natural, low-key waves. An optional add-on is to take small sections of hair and add in some delicate plaits around the head, or just at the crown across the forehead.

Alternatively, for more defined beachy waves, use a heated tool such as the T3 Loose Waves Straight Barrel, which is perfectly sized for a naturally tousled look. Fix your style with a hairspray, but choose one that offers a light hold so hair can still move; we love the Ouai Soft Hair Spray.
