Creating Foil Eyes

Glitter’s comeback has been cemented this season with an upgrade as the trend moved away from subtle sparkle towards a denser metallic finish. The SS19 catwalks were covered with looks that embraced shimmer, but it was foil eyes that stole the show – popping up at Halpern, Simone Rocha, Versace and more. We featured a beautiful foil eye in our makeup campaign this season and although it looks tricky, it’s actually easy to achieve. Just follow our step by step guide . . .

Step One: Prep Your Base

Keep your complexion pared back, flawless and matte so that your eyes can steal the show. First up, prepare skin with the classic Laura Mercier Foundation Primer, which helps makeup to last longer and creates a perfect smooth canvas so makeup is applied more easily. Next, swipe on Nars Velvet Matte Foundation Stick and smooth over skin with the attached blender, layering in any areas that need extra coverage.

Step Two: Prime Your Eyelids

Begin by applying an eye primer such as Nars Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base all over the lid, up to the brow line and pat a small amount on the lower eyelid too. This smoothing formula provides grip for your eyeshadow to lock onto and helps to fill fine lines so you don’t get clumps of glitter.

Step Three: Create Your Foil Eyes

Warm a pencil eyeliner like By Terry Crayon Khol Terrybly on the back of your hand before drawing a fine line close to your lashes along the eyelid for definition. Next, take Stila Magnificent Metals Shimmer & Glow Liquid Eye Shadow and using the back of the doe foot applicator press gently onto your upper lid creating a flattering cat eye shape by taking it slightly up and out at the outer corners. Let it set, then layer another coat on to intensify the effect and build up the foil finish.

Step Four: Build Shimmer and Definition

For a really vivid finish layer the sparkling powder part of Tom Ford Cream And Powder Eye Colour over the top of your shade and then take a fine brush such as Space NK 305 Brush and pull the shadow along the lower lash line, before shaping upwards at the outer corner of the eyes. Deepen the look by applying your eyeliner pencil along the lower waterline, then curl lashes with the cult Kevyn Aucoin The Eyelash Curler and apply Nars Climax Mascara by wiggling the wand into the lash roots, then pulling through for volume and thickness.

Step Five: Finish With Brows and Lips

Fill in brows with Kevyn Aucoin The Precision Brow Pencil and use the attached spoolie to brush upwards for a softer finish. Pair your dramatic disco eyes with a defined but natural looking lip. Outline lips with Lipstick Queen Invisible Lip Liner and try the glossy By Terry Lip-Expert Shine in 1 Baby Beige for a polished, unified finish.
