Behind The Brand: Drunk Elephant

Drunk Elephant Product

Whether you’re a diehard Drunk Elephant fan and have been waiting for its UK debut from the off, or you’ve heard the hype and want to know what all the fuss is about, we caught up with founder Tiffany Masterson to bring you the lowdown. From the free-from ingredients to the pared back product edit, find out why everyone’s lining up to join the Drunk Elephant stampede…

How Did The Brand Come About?

Drunk Elephant was born out of founder Tiffany Masterson’s quest to solve her own skin issues. Frustrated at not being able to find solutions for her consistent skin complaints, ranging from an oily T-zone to the occasional breakout, mild rosacea and visible pores, she decided to get to the bottom of it and started taking note of the ingredients in her existing skincare and how her skin reacted.

It soon became apparent that certain ingredients caused adverse reactions and so Tiffany started to cut out what she has now coined the ‘Suspicious 6’. Once she cut out these six suspect ingredients, she noticed that her skin returned to a clear, healthy and balanced state. Although Tiffany had cracked the code to a clear complexion, the issue then became finding skincare that worked within the framework of her new needs. “I couldn’t find products without one or more of these suspects,” she explained, “so I decided to make them myself.”

The Suspicious 6

The Suspicious 6 include essential oils, silicones, chemical sunscreen, sodium lauryl sulfate, fragrance/dyes and drying alcohols, and while these ingredients might work for some, Tiffany believes that these were primarily to blame for her various skin concerns. Free from the Suspicious 6, all Drunk Elephant products allow you to take a ‘clean break’ and reset your skin to its natural, happy state.

Compatible Formulations

We already know about the ingredients you won’t find in Drunk Elephant, but what can you expect to find? “We only formulate using bio-compatible ingredients,” says Tiffany. “These are non-irritating, bio-available ingredients that skin can easily absorb, understand and process.”

The whole premise of this pared back skincare brand is to not confuse or overload skin, but rather assist its natural ability to protect and repair. This concept of skincare that works with skin as opposed to against it, is what Tiffany coins ‘Clean Compatible’ skincare. When it comes to key ingredients, you’ll notice that marula oil features throughout the collection. Derived from the African marula nut, this wonder-working, luxury facial oil is high in critical antioxidants and rich in nourishing omegas 6 and 9, helping to moisturise, rejuvenate and nourish skin while restoring a youthful glow. You’ll also find that the blends include the highest percentages of actives at ideal pH levels with non-sensitising ingredients, making for a line of products that are very gentle, yet potent at the same time.

The Best Bit

The good news is that every product is designed with everyone in mind. Throwing out the traditional notion of ‘skin type’, Tiffany believes that red blotches, dry patches, and blemishes are all just skin’s way of telling us that it’s out of balance. So, instead of diagnosing serums and creams for specific skin ‘types’, she has created universal products to address all skin concerns and to better support skin’s function.

In saying this, there are a few heroes set to become Space NK bestsellers. Here’s what we’re excited about:
