Caudalie’s Mathilde Thomas On French Beauty Hacks

Caudalie’s Mathilde Thomas On French Beauty Hacks
French women are renowned for their effortlessly chic and seemingly low key approach to beauty. For years, we have been trying to replicate their routines and intrigued by their beauty hacks.

From the creams they choose and how they apply them to their go-to shade of red lipstick and how they achieve that textured, undone hair. Admittedly, there are plenty of tips and tricks to be found on Google, but we wanted authentic advice that we could trust implicitly, so we asked Caudalie’s founder Mathilde Thomas for her straightforward guide...

It All Starts With Skincare

Skincare is crucial for French women. We want flawless skin with a natural look. To achieve this, we moisturise daily with a formula packed full of antioxidants. These help to stop free radicals, which are responsible for 80% of the signs of ageing. We double cleanse morning and night with a natural oil cleanser first, followed by a foaming cleanser. Most importantly though, we never fail to use SPF50 sunscreen before leaving the house.

Take A Multi-Pronged Approach

Boosting our natural collagen levels is a focus point and requires a multi-pronged approach. When it comes to skincare, I recommend the Resveratrol Lift collection, which contains a Harvard patent in partnership with Caudalie. The technology has been shown to boost your natural collagen and hyaluronic acid levels.

In terms of our lifestyle, we drink a lot of Evian water, take vitamin C supplements, try to quit smoking and avoid sugar as it speeds up the ageing process. Most French women also take a probiotic supplement to help support their skin, as well as their gut health. A lactobacillus rhamnosus dietary supplement helps on the inside, while Caudalie Beauty Elixir, £8.40 works on the outside thanks to the grape water.

Keep Your Makeup Simple

The secret is to keep it simple, and always having strong staples in your makeup bag. I like to use green products such as the RMS Beauty Luminizer, £39.00 and . Always make sure your brows are fixed in place (I swear by . And, for a “your lips but better” lipstick, look to .

My one golden rule is to always choose between red lips and smoky eyes. Never try to wear both at once. French beauty is always minimalist.

Look After Your Scalp

Healthy hair is key for an undone but still pulled-together look. Using a cleansing shampoo once a week (I like by Christophe Robin) helps to deeply cleanse the scalp and remove any residues. It’s also important to nourish your hair in between washes using a strengthening oil, such as Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair! Strengthening Treatment Hair Oil, £28.00. I also love the brand’s Briogeo Don't Despair, Repair! Deep Conditioning Mask, £15.00.
