Dr Maryam Zamani skin tips | Space NK
Chances are you recognise the name Dr Maryam Zamani from the packaging of MZ SKIN, one of the most sought-after skincare brands that graces our shelves, but how much do you know about the female force behind it? Well, as it turns out, Dr Maryam Zamani, oculoplastic surgeon and facial aesthetics doctor is the go-to skin specialist. Put it this way, half of London has her clinic in Chelsea on speed dial.

With a cult following both in the UK and US, fans include the likes of Elle Macpherson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Princess Charlene of Monaco, Suki Waterhouse and Serena Williams to name but a few. We sat down with Dr Maryam Zamani to find out more about her backstory, beauty philosophy and raising the benchmark for beauty brands.

What's your skincare philosophy?

I firmly believe less is more, so I always encourage patients to create a consistent routine that can be maintained. The best routine is the one that you can keep, and I want my patients and clients to feel and look their best at every age.

Using gentle but effective cleansing and exfoliating products makes your skin receptive to other ingredients used, then you need to enhance your skin with intelligent formulations and active ingredients that bolster collagen production, reduce pigmentation and treat the skin. Finally, you need to protect your skin from the harmful environmental factors.

Current treatments trends…

BBL (BroadBand Light) combined with Moxi laser are excellent new non-invasive ways to clear pigmentation, stimulate collagen production and polish skin for radiant glow. To tighten and tone skin on the body, EmSculpt Neo is the newest effective way to do this. It also burns fat to sculpt the arms, abdomen, and legs and I love combining it with skin boosters to improve skin hydration and tone.

In my office, I have had an increase in male patients having both surgical and non-surgical tweakments for eyelids, heavy brows, lines, dark circles and puffy eyes. One-fifth of my surgical patients are men having upper or lower eyelid blepharoplasty.

Aesthetic treatments are also on the rise with tear trough fillers, non-surgical rhinoplasties proving popular. Non-surgical interventions including threads, Ultherapy or jawline contouring to help improve the contours of the lower face, are also being requested.

On building a brand…

When I had my two children, I suffered from melasma, and my clear skin looked dirty. I turned to doctor endorsed skin brands, but they were made by men and the self-care aspect seemed lost. I had always loved skincare not just for the ingredients but for the ritual aspect, so I went back to the brands I loved using and started formulating on the side.

Initially I created products just for myself and my patients, but now seven years on and we’re going from strength to strength with a brand that’s now global. Looking back, I didn’t realise that creating the formulas would be the easy part! The business plan and implementation were difficult because it was all new territory, and because it has been a self-funded project, I’ve had to navigate the smallest obstacles.

The most common request I get in the office is how to make my patients look less tired, so my Soothe & Smooth is dual action by helping decrease the appearance of dark circles and helping detoxify that area while also plumping the skin and promoting collagen production simultaneously. Our LED devices are extremely popular, especially our newly launched MZ SKIN LightMAX MiniPro Eyeconic LED, £ 300,00 which has surpassed our expectations.

Treatment trend predictions for 2024…

The at-home tech space is undergoing a dynamic evolution, driven by technological advances, changing consumer habits, and the post-pandemic landscape. Consumers are seeking convenience, and this has led to a proliferation of innovative devices that offer clinical experiences at home, from advanced skincare tools to virtual fitness platforms.

The integration of AI, IoT, and data analytics is enhancing device capabilities and user experiences. However, regulatory scrutiny and the need for reliable efficacy remain important considerations as the at-home tech sector continues to reshape self-care routines and redefine traditional industries.

Dr Zamani’s backstory…

Being the oldest child of two Iranian doctors, I was always called “Mrs Doctor”, even before I knew what it meant, so my destiny was written. After receiving my medical doctorate my decision to subspecialise came when I volunteered for Operation Smile. I was fortunate enough to go to Thailand and saw the magic of helping kids and adults with cleft lips and palates. I loved seeing confidence and quality of life being restored to these patients.

Because I always enjoyed the more delicate facial procedures, I felt that ophthalmology and further sub specialisation into oculoplastics would be perfect for me. Adding the non-surgical aesthetics was not something I knew about then because they were not popular or mainstream treatments.

When I moved to London and completed two oculoplastic fellowships, I researched the use of hyaluronic acid fillers in treating patients with facial defects and it was from that exposure that the depth of my knowledge increased in the realm of non-surgical treatments. From there, I went on to study dermatology and I developed my own practice incorporating all that I had learned...and the rest is history as they say!
