Salicylic acid is a BHA (beta hydroxy acid), an effective solution for clogged pores and uneven skin texture. Unlike AHAs, which work only on the surface, BHAs penetrate deep into pores to help clear congestion and refine skin from within.
Salicylic acid helps reduce the appearance of acne by clearing clogged pores and gently exfoliating dead skin cells. Its anti-inflammatory and bacteria-fighting properties also help to calm redness and prevent future breakouts.
Salicylic acid can be used in a cleanser, serum, topical treatment, or moisturiser, as well as in toners or masks like Paula's Choice BHA toner or The Ordinary Salicylic Acid Masque. Strength and application can vary by product, so always check the packaging before use. Because salicylic acid can cause initial irritation, start with a small amount and gradually increase frequency. Avoid layering multiple products containing salicylic acid, and always follow with SPF the next day, as it can make skin more sensitive to UV damage.
Exfoliating, drying ingredients like retinol and glycolic acid shouldn’t be used in the same routine as salicylic acid, as it can lead to irritation and a damaged skin barrier.
You may experience a temporary increase in breakouts while your skin adjusts to salicylic acid, as it works to unclog pores and bring congestion to the surface. Introduce it gradually to minimise side effects. Purging can last up to four weeks but will eventually settle.
