Your Questions, Answered

Setting powder is a makeup product you use as one of the last steps in your makeup routine – after your liquid and cream base products, and before your setting spray. You’ll find setting powder comes in both loose (such as Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder and Hourglass’ translucent powder) and pressed forms, and can be either translucent or tinted to match different skin tones.

Setting powder is primarily designed to lock in your foundation, concealer and other complexion products, helping these last longer and prevent smudging, creasing or melting throughout the day. It’s also excellent for mattifying the complexion, controlling any excess shine and oil and disguising fine lines. Setting powder can be reapplied throughout the day if need be.

After applying your liquid or cream foundation, concealer and other liquid or cream base products, take a fluffy brush, sponge or puff and use a light hand to focus on the undereye area and areas prone to shine and oiliness. If you’re using a brush, gently tap the handle of the brush to remove any excess product – it’s always best to start lightly! For even more of an airbrushed finish or soft-focus effect, try finishing powder. And, if you’re looking to brighten and sculpt, you might want to look into baking techniques with powder!
