Why You Need This £36 Dry Shampoo

It’s the holy grail of dry shampoos but at £36, Oribe’s offering is an investment buy. Leyla Rudolf explains why it’s one worth making…

My hair has seen a lot of dry shampoos. From the high street must-have, to one formulated by a top stylist and another laced with one of my favourite perfumes; I’ve tried them all. In part, it’s because my hair is very fine and subsequently, if I go just two days without shampooing it, oily roots soon set in. It’s also because, with two young children, I don’t have time to wash and blow dry my hair every day – a dry shampoo hides this fact and adds body and bounce where it’s lacking. So when Oribe’s Gold Lust Dry Shampoo landed on my desk, it’s fair to say I was intrigued. This dry shampoo does it all; from soothing sensitive scalps, to restoring strength and softness, boosting body and extending time between styling. And if you’re not familiar with the brand, it’s worth noting Oribe’s (pronounced Or-bay) reputation is stellar; founded by the iconic hairstylist Oribe Canales, the high-end collection of shampoos, styling products and treatments are all packed with the finest plant extracts and essential oils and, aesthetically, they don’t look too bad on a bathroom shelf either.

At £36, this dry shampoo costs six times more than my usual go-to. However, as Michele Burgess, Executive Director of Product Development for Oribe Hair Care explains, its benefits more than outweigh the initial spend. “It contains celery seed extract which helps extend time between styling by reducing oil on the scalp and chamomile and lavender to soothe sensitive scalps,” she explains. “Plus, it has a translucent starch blend which instantly absorbs dirt, oil, impurities and product buildup to give you that ‘just washed’ look and feel.” Music to my ears. I put it through a rigorous testing regime, spritzing it into hair that’s not seen shampoo for two days (it was a busy week) and honestly, I was amazed at its effects; it soaked up every dot of dirt and grease and best of all, left no hazy white clouds, sticky texture or gritty after-feel behind in its wake. In fact, my hair felt like it had just been washed; light, fresh and a little bit bouncy. Best of all, it smells great. Turns out it contains Oribe’s signature fragrance of watermelon, lychee and edelweiss flower that protects hair but also uses fragrance-retention technology that makes it last all day.

Conclusion: Oribe’s Gold Lust Shampoo is by no means a bargain buy – but if you’re a regular dry shampoo user and short on shower time, it’s worth the investment for fresher, cleaner and great smelling hair.
