8 Sustainable Beauty Brands To Have On Your Radar

8 Sustainable Beauty Brands To Have On Your Radar
Sustainability isn’t a passing trend, it’s a way of life that we’re all navigating. Plenty of beauty brands have tailored their approach to ensure their products are as kind to the environment as possible. From sustainably sourcing ingredients to using recycled and recyclable packaging, there are many ways to be conscious of the planet. There is no set definition of what makes a product eco-friendly and sustainable though. In recent years ‘greenwashing’, AKA overstating the green claims of a product, has made it confusing for anyone to shop for eco-friendly skincare and makeup.

The British Beauty Council has created a very helpful Planet Positive Beauty Guide which outlines the meaning of the various symbols we see on our beauty labels (from the cruelty-free bunny to the Soil Association emblem), as well as the most eco-friendly packaging and the third-party verification organisations like B Corp that highlight sustainable suppliers.

As part of our Better Space initiative, Space NK has teamed up with Handle. All you need to do is pop into your local Space NK store, pick up a Handle bag, fill it with your beauty empties and drop it back off with us. To make shopping for sustainable skincare, haircare and makeup products easier, we’ve also rounded up our favourite brands.

8 Of Our Favourite Eco-Friendly Makeup & Skincare Brands

Ren Clean Skincare

Evercalm Global Protection Day Cream, $48.30

Ren Clean Skincare is probably one of the most famous sustainable beauty brands and for good reason. The brand has worked tirelessly to not just reduce but eradicate single use plastic packaging. Back in 2018 it stopped all sample sachets and two years later the brand unveiled its 100% recyclable packaging which has the potential to save 9.5 tones of plastic from landfill. Unsurprisingly, Ren Clean Skincare is a go-to for anyone looking for results-driven, sustainable skincare. One of the bestselling products at Space NK is the Evercalm Global Protection Day Cream, which hydrates and soothes sensitive skin. The formula is also vegan-friendly and the packaging is recyclable.

The Body Wash Eucalyptus, $10.00

Nécessaire is a relatively new kid on the block, but it is ticking off all the essential eco-friendly markers, including off-setting its carbon footprint and allocating 1% of every sale to environmental non-profits. As sustainable beauty brands go, it’s definitely one to have on your radar and in your bathroom cabinet. There’s no better way to start your day than with The Body Wash Eucalyptus and we’re very excited for the upcoming launch of the Nécessaire Deodorant Gel.

Curator Palette, $14.50

When it comes to nailing eco-friendly makeup, Hourglass is leading the way. From the vegan-friendly formulas to the sustainable packaging, the luxury brand has put the environment at the forefront without compromising on the finish of its formulas. While Hourglass Caution Extreme Lash Mascara, $40.00 and Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder, $62.50 are two essentials in our makeup bags, we love the Curator Palette. You choose the highly pigmented eyeshadows and the palette itself is aluminium, so you won’t be left with a couple of shades you never wear, and the packaging is easily recycled. This is eco-friendly makeup at its very best.

100% Squalane Oil, N/A

Biossance is a very impressive, sustainable skincare brand. From its packaging to its formulas, the brand takes a conscious approach to every step of product production. For example, squalene is an oil found in sharks’ livers and has previously been used to produce squalane in skincare products. Biossance has bio-engineered a sugarcane-derived squalane which saves two million sharks a year. The brand’s 100% Squalane Oil is vegan-friendly and helps to nourish everything from dry knees to windswept hair – it is no surprise that it’s a bestseller. If you have dry or sensitive skin, we recommend you tap up too.

JVN Hair

Complete Pre-wash Scalp Oil, $32.00

As a strong social and climate campaigner, it makes sense that Jonathan Van Ness’ beauty brand, JVN Hair puts the environment at the centre of everything it does. From the sustainably sourced ingredients to the aluminium and glass packaging that can be recycled infinite times, this is feel-good haircare for everyone.

RMS Beauty

Luminizer, $50.50

Another dreamy eco-friendly makeup brand, RMS has been dispelling the myth that natural cosmetics don’t have the same colour pay-off for over 12 years. Founder Rose-Marie Swift has been a strong advocate of the clean beauty movement and has been creating multitasking formulas since 2009. Our go-to product is the lightweight, non-glittery highlighter, but plenty of the Space NK team swear by RMS Beauty UnCoverup Concealer, $39.00.

Kora Organics

Berry Bright Vitamin C Eye Cream, $60.00

Model, mum and businesswoman Miranda Kerr is not here for any greenwashing and her brand, Kora Organics uses certified organic and natural ingredients, following the ECOCERT standards and many of the bestselling creams are refillable. We love both the Kora Organics Turmeric Glow Moisturizer, $23.00 and this brightening, nourishing eye cream.

Augustinus Bader

The Ultimate Soothing Cream, $300.00

Professor Augustinus Bader is pedantic about ensuring his formulas not only deliver results, but also do as little harm to the environment as possible. As a result, all ingredients are sustainably sourced and bio-engineered actives are used where possible to ease the pressure on the planet. While 70% of the packaging is plastic free, the brand is moving towards ECOCERT certified glass, and the full range comes in carbon balancing paper and the brand aims to be carbon neutral by the end of 2022. We are currently loving the new and super calming Ultimate Soothing Cream, which is refillable.
