We Asked The Team To Review Tatcha's New Matcha Cleanser

Tatcha Matcha Cleanse review | Space NK

Celebrated for its exceptional use of Japanese rituals and ingredients that result in the dreamiest formulas, Tatcha knows how to turn our skincare routines into little moments of luxury. From the iconic Dewy Skin Cream to The Rice Polish, it feels like each Tatcha product has been beautifully thought out – whether that’s in its link to Japanese culture, its Pinterest-worthy design, or its visible results.

The new Tatcha Matcha Cleanse is no different. People in Japan see purification as the first step to a healthy-looking complexion, and this face cleanser is indeed on a mission to purify. It’s powered by a fascinating concoction of Japanese botanicals including antioxidant-rich kyo-matcha, Japanese mugwort and BHA alternatives Japanese Coix seed and willow bark.

Specifically designed to benefit oily and acne-prone skin, this fragrance-free gel formula is made to help decongest pores without stripping or irritating skin, control oil, smooth skin texture and prime skin to help makeup wear better throughout the day.

As promising as it sounds, we asked a few members from the Space NK team to trial the cleanser for approximately three weeks – here are their thoughts…

HANITRA’S TATCHA MATCHA CLEANSE REVIEW

• Skin type: Oily and acne-prone

• Skin tone: Medium

• The product: Tatcha Matcha Cleanse, € 48,30

Tatcha Matcha Cleanse - Hanitra

As someone who gets congested skin quite easily, I look for something that’s really going to cleanse my skin and pores, but without stripping my skin, which can be a challenge to find. Whether it’s an exfoliating cleanser or one with oil-reducing actives, I want something that’s going to contribute to keeping breakouts at bay.

The texture was very interesting, I’ve never tried a cleanser like this before! When I first squeezed it out of the tube, the texture was quite jelly-like and a bit difficult to break down unless you mixed it with water. Once I started working it into my skin, it felt quite gentle on the skin as it foamed up nicely. It felt nice and clean but didn’t feel dry or stripped, which is what I fear with cleansers that are meant for oily skin. It’s a great first step to my evening skincare routine, to have clean slate for the treatments I’m going to use.

I only wash my face with a cleanser in the evening. I used it two different ways – first by itself when I still had makeup on. I think it did a great job at removing my makeup, and I could use it as my only cleanse on days where I wore light makeup. Then I used it as part of my double cleanse, which is how I usually cleanse my skin. I used the Farmacy Beauty Green Clean Makeup Removing Cleansing Balm, € 27,60 as my first step to break down my makeup and SPF, and then used the Tatcha Matcha Cleanse to remove what was left.

This cleanser is going to stay in my cleanser rotation, especially on those days when I feel extra oily and need something that’s going to wash the day away. I won’t be using it as my everyday cleanser because I like to use something gentler on the nights I use stronger serums like retinol.

VANESSA’S TATCHA MATCHA CLEANSE REVIEW

• Skin type: Oily-combination

• Skin tone: Olive

• The product: Tatcha Matcha Cleanse, € 48,30

Tatcha Matcha Cleanse - Vanessa

As a dedicated Tatcha fan, there’s always room for Tatcha newness in my skincare routine. So when I heard that Tatcha was launching a cleanser made with oily skin types in mind, I knew my oily-combination complexion would have to give it a try. Funnily enough, apart from my beloved Tatcha The Camellia Cleansing Oil, € 56,00, I’ve never tried a Tatcha cleanser before, so I my excitement about this Tatcha launch was even more palpable!

Despite having oily and congested skin that’s sometimes dehydrated and dull, I’m not particularly fussy about cleansers – I just like to find that sweet spot between feeling like my skin is fresh and clean without having been too stripped or dried out. As for my initial thoughts on this cleanser, I was surprised at the jelly-like thickness of the texture. It wasn’t unpleasant in any way however, and in true Tatcha nature, it felt lovely on the skin.

I’d start by dampening my skin a little, putting a pea-sized amount on the back of my hand and gently massaging it all over my complexion (apart from the eye area). My skin felt fine afterwards – I’d say it had a mattifying effect, but thankfully not a stripping effect. I tried using it to remove makeup, but it didn’t quite do the job and I had to use my Camellia Cleansing Oil. This doesn’t bother me as I wear quite heavy makeup and I normally always double cleanse by starting with an oil or balm beforehand. I also felt like the Camellia Cleansing Oil and Matcha Cleanse worked wonders together!

Tatcha Matcha Cleanse - Vanessa's Before And After
Vanessa before and after using Tatcha The Matcha Cleanse

I’ve now been using this cleanser during my AM and PM routines for a few weeks and will definitely continue to use it, as it’s working well with all my other skincare. Also most importantly, it seems to be helping my skin look a little less congested.

THE VERDICT ON THE TATCHA MATCHA CLEANSE

As surprised as they were initially about the texture, both Hanitra and Vanessa ultimately enjoyed using the Tatcha Matcha Cleanse, € 48,30 and have added it to their regular routines. “I think it’s a must-try for oily skin types,” says Vanessa.

Additionally, both agree that it probably wouldn’t suit someone with dry or even combination skin. “I’d recommend this to people who have a similar skin type as mine,” says Hanitra. “I'd advise anyone with dry or combination skin to go for something like Tatcha The Rice Wash, € 47,00 as it’s gentler on the skin.”
