TikTok has seriously taken hold this year. What started as the go-to app for Gen Z’s to create and share snappy content has morphed into a social media platform with over 800 million active users in just four years.
From Lisa Rinna’s almost daily dance routines to Spencer X’s beatboxing skills, TikTok spans different ages and genres. Watch one video and you’ll go down a fascinating rabbit hole for at least half an hour.
One person you should actively seek out and follow is makeup illusionist RJ Tulloch, aka @cakefacerj. RJ’s makeup transformations are jaw-droppingly spectacular. We caught up with the 21 year old to find out more…
TikTok Wasn’t Really The Plan
I never really thought about TikTok as an additional platform to work on, but I thought it won’t hurt to try it out and see if there’s an interest. I loved doing Instagram tutorials and my followers loved them too. TikTok seemed like the perfect way to show how I transform myself into different illusions even quicker.
It Takes A Lot More Time Than People Think
My illusions can take anywhere from five hours to 15. It’s very tiring, but I love doing it. My makeup essentials are definitely a professional set of brushes, a smooth base and a good eyeshadow palette with a range of shades, such as Charlotte Tilbury’s.
I Don’t Use Stage Makeup
I feel like the makeup products I use for my illusions are kind of my unique selling point. Rather than opting for stage makeup or face and body paint, I use the eyeshadows, concealers, eyeliners and powders that I wear for my usual day to day makeup. Two of my favourites are Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder and Kevyn Aucoin The Neo-Blush.
My Makeup Stash Is Growing
While my illusions take organisation, my makeup bag is a mess. My collection has grown a lot since I started posting my looks on Instagram. I now have over 1000 products easily. I try to be organised, but I think I’m way past being minimalist!
There Is One Illusion That Stands Out For Me
My favourite transformation to date has to be Stanley Hudson. I’m a huge fan of The Office and I was so happy it made so many people laugh! It took me seven hours, but it was worth it.
