Your Questions, Answered
Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) are a type of exfoliating acid. They are water-soluble, meaning they do not penetrate pores and instead work on your skin’s surface to improve the appearance of texture and fine lines, while also helping to hydrate your skin.
Beta hydroxy acids (BHAs) are a type of exfoliating acid. They are oil-soluble, meaning they can penetrate deep into pores to help clear excess sebum and congestion.
AHAs and BHAs helps to loosen and dissolve the bonds between dead skin cells, so they can be more easily removed and reveal a softer, smoother, more radiant-looking complexion. With consistent use, they can also help support a healthy skin barrier, even out skin tone and texture, and enhance the absorption of your active ingredients.
AHAs and BHAs are most commonly found in toners, which should be applied after cleansing to clean, dry skin. If you’re using a mask, serum or peel, always follow the specific product instructions.
As a general rule, use exfoliating acids two to three times a week to help avoid irritation. However, if your skin tolerated them well for several weeks without signs of irritation, some toners - such as Medik8 Press & Clear or Paula’s Choice 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant - can be used twice daily.
The most common types of AHAs are glycolic acid and lactic acid, while the primary BHA used in skincare is salicylic acid.
Because of their hydrating properties, AHAs are best suited to those with dry, sun-damaged, or mature skin looking to improve radiance, texture, and firmness. BHAs are recommended for oily, blemish-prone, or congested skin types.
If you have sensitive skin, opt for a gentle exfoliating toner such as Paula’s Choice 1% BHA Gentle Exfoliating Gel Toner, which contains a lower 1% concentration of salicylic acid.
