Ditch Your Makeup Wipes
This isn’t a lecture on eco-friendly beauty practises (although wipes are terrible for the environment), but cleansing wipes won’t remove your makeup as effectively, especially if you’re wearing waterproof mascara. If you want the job done quickly, look for a cleanser that removes makeups and is formulated for your eye area. Both Caudalie Vinoclean Cleansing Almond Milk, € 19,00 and Plenaire Rose Jelly Gentle Makeup Remover, € 19,50 will remove eye makeup and cleanse your skin simultaneously. Sisley-Paris Make-up Remover and Cleanser, € 105,00 is particularly good if you have dry skin.
Slide Don’t Scrub To Remove Mascara
No matter how tired you are or how stubborn your eye makeup is, don’t be tempted to scrub it side to side. You will end up irritating your eyes and losing a few eyelashes. Instead, press your reusable cotton wool pad or flannel against your lashes for a second or two and then gently slide down. You might need to repeat the process if you were wearing waterproof mascara.
If you wear contact lenses or have sensitive eyes, I highly recommend investing in Sisley-Paris Eau Efficace Gentle Make-Up Remover, € 110,00. As a contact lens wearer, I can testify that this formula is, as promised on the label, gentle and the pump dispenser makes it straightforward to use.
Go Oil-Free For Lash Extensions
While lash extensions might make mascara redundant, eyeliner, eyeshadow and concealer are still makeup must-haves for a lot of people. If you have lash extensions, you should avoid oil-based eye makeup removers. Makeup artist Warren Dowdall recommends Darphin Intral Daily Micellar Toner, € 40,00. “Soak a cotton pad and gently wipe the makeup away,” says Warren. “You may need to leave the cotton pad on the area for a few seconds to break down heavy eye makeup, but this formula will leave your lash extensions looking perfect.”
Warren recommends using the same micellar water to remove false eyelashes too. “Soak a Q tip in the formula and roll it over the lash band, back and forth, to dissolve the lash adhesive without tugging at your eyes.”
Don’t Forget Your Eye Cream
It might be 2am, you might be unsteady on your feet and your alarm might be set for five hours’ time, but whatever you do, don’t forget to follow up with eye cream. Even the best eye makeup removers won’t irritate your eyes, but they also won’t provide enough hydration. Tula Skincare Glow & Get It Cooling & Brightening Eye Balm, € 30,00 takes seconds to swipe on, while Summer Fridays Light Aura Vitamin C + Peptide Eye Cream, € 43,00 will give your skin a dose of vitamin C as you sleep.
