8 Beauty Buys You Need In Your 'Big Day' Bag

Luckily, makeup artist Ruby Hammer has some advice. “If you’re doing your own makeup, you should have done trial runs with every single product in the lead up to your big day,” she tells us. “Nothing should be new, and definitely don’t introduce a product on the day that you haven’t tried before.” It’s a sure way to get that familiar feeling (the one that makes us so confident in our daily makeup decisions) and ultimately take the fear out of doing your own wedding makeup. After that, it’s all about staying calm.
“Make sure you’re not hungry or thirsty, surround yourself with whoever helps you feel calm, and if other people panic you, have noone. Sit in a really good light with a good mirror, be comfortable, don’t panic, breathe, and enjoy the process. Then very calmly and pleasantly go through your steps,” Ruby instructs. Worried about making a mistake? It’s ok. “Make sure your brushes are all clean so you’re not using something that already has product on it - that way you’ll get the true colour,” she tells us, and “even if things get a bit blotchy, just calmly blend that out and do it again,” says Ruby.
Why is it so important to stay calm? Because getting that initial look done is how we prevent the need for constant top ups. “If you've done all your prep, used lots of thin little layers and made your makeup long lasting, you won’t really need to patch up or keep topping up your makeup all day long,” Ruby tells us. And ultimately, that allows us to focus on what’s really important on the day. “You're meant to enjoy this with your partner, family and friends, so have your products there, but it’s not about topping up all day long. It’s more about enjoying the day and creating that memory,” says Ruby.
So, what are the essential wedding products to have on the day according to Ruby? Read on.
Charlotte Tilbury
K.I.S.S.I.N.G Refillable Lipstick, € 35,00
The Lipstick
If all other products are forgotten, your lipstick is the one product Rubytells us to prioritise. “If you’re planning to eat and drink throughout the course of the day, your lipstick will need some topping up,” says Hammer. “To keep your lipstick fresh, have the same product you used in the morning on hand, and you might also need a little Q-tip so every so often, you can just wipe off here and there,” she adds.

Laura Mercier
Pure Canvas Primer Perfecting, € 44,00
The Primer
When it comes to ensuring your skin looks its best on the day, a great primer is an absolute must according to Ruby. “It’s so important to choose a primer that’s relevant to you. If you’ve got oily skin, you’re probably going to need something that will help with the shine, and if you have dry skin, you want a more hydrating one.” This water-based option from Laura Mercier gives skin the perfect balance.

Laura Mercier
Pure Canvas Primer Perfecting, € 44,00
The Waterproof Mascara
“It’s probably going to be a very long day, so you do need to think about something that’s going to last and make you look good for the rest of your wedding day,” says Ruby. “Also, you might cry, and in that case, you need waterproof stuff. Waterproof mascara and liner are essential,” she adds. Neither this mascara nor Hourglass Voyeur Waterproof Gel Eyeliner in Obsidian, € 32,00 will let you down.

Nars
Soft Matte Complete Concealer, € 29,00
The Concealer
Ruby advises against layering your base products throughout the day, “as you’ll end up looking cakey and cracked.” That’s why she recommends having a good concealer to just touch up if needed. “Keep a fluffy brush on hand that you can use to buff over and refine any areas, and then be very light handed and strategically top up where needed,” she tells us.

Charlotte Tilbury
Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray, € 18,00
The Setting Spray
“Setting sprays smell nice, they reinvigorate your skin, and they sort of awaken you and give you a lift,” says Ruby. “I would say it’s more important to get your base (primer foundation and concealer) right, and then the setting spray is just a misting at the end to perk you up as the day goes on. For those with dry skin, I’d recommend a very refreshing light mist,” she tells us.

Erborian
Super BB Cream Au Ginseng, € 42,00
The SPF
Planning a summer wedding? With all that’s going on, you mustn't forget to add SPF to your makeup routine. Not only will it protect you from those harmful UV rays, but we’re pretty sure ‘burnt bride’ was the look you were going for. “If you are going to be out and about all day, you might want to consider an spf, although you do need to be careful about flashback,” says Ruby. That’s why we recommend something to give a lightweight layer under your foundation. And don’t forget to protect your hairline and scalp if they’re exposed.

Rose Inc
Cream Blush Refillable Cheek & Lip Colour, € 30,00
The Blush
What’s Ruby’s tip when it comes to blush? “Build layers. You might do a thin layer of a cream blush, set that with a translucent powder and then top it up with a similar shade of powder blush to make it long lasting,” she tells us. It’s a great tip for adding a touch more colour without disrupting your existing blush as you head into the evening.

Rae Morris
Invisible Mattifier, € 59,00
The Translucent Powder
“This is a great product for managing oily skin on your wedding day. It’s a wonderful tool for anybody who wants to mattify in the hairline, on the nose, and on the chin. It’s quite expensive, but is a great product for those with oily skin or anyone just trying to keep shine at bay,” says Ruby.

Rare Beauty
Positive Light Liquid Luminizer, € 30,00
The Highlighter
As a final finishing touch, apply a swipe of Rare Beauty Positive Light Liquid Luminizer to the tops of your brow and cheekbones to add extra definition. “It catches the light while you’re dancing,” adds Ruby.
