8 Beauty Buys You Need For Your 'Big Day'

8 Beauty Buys You Need For Your 'Big Day'
The dress has been chosen, the venue set, seating plans are in motion, and the honeymoon is booked. In fact, there’s just one thing left on the to-do list - our wedding hair and makeup. Despite knowing exactly which products to turn to with the intention of dialling things up; our trusty smoky palette, the punchier lipstick, and game-changing highlighter, when it comes to wedding makeup? We honestly don’t know where to start.

Luckily, makeup artist Ruby Hammer has some advice. “If you’re doing your own makeup, you should have done trial runs with every single product in the lead up to your big day,” she tells us. “Nothing should be new, and definitely don’t introduce a product on the day that you haven’t tried before.” So, what are the essential wedding products to have on the day according to Ruby? Read on.

Laura Mercier

Pure Canvas Primer Perfecting, £41.50

The Primer
When it comes to ensuring your skin looks its best on the day, a great primer is an absolute must according to Ruby. “It’s so important to choose a primer that’s relevant to you. If you’ve got oily skin, you’re probably going to need something that will help with the shine, and if you have dry skin, you want a more hydrating one.” This water-based option from Laura Mercier gives skin the perfect balance.

IT Cosmetics

CC+Nude Glow, £36.50

The Multitasking Base
Keep your base light and use a heavy duty concealer on areas that need extra coverage. This will ensure your skin looks fresh and natural all day. “Use a fluffy brush to buff over and refine any areas, and then if you need to touch-up throughout the day, be very light handed and strategically top up where needed,” Ruby tells us.

Rose Inc

Cream Blush Refillable Cheek & Lip Colour, £27.00

The Blush
What’s Ruby’s tip when it comes to wedding makeup blush? “Build layers. You might do a thin layer of a cream blush, set that with a translucent powder and then top it up with a similar shade of powder blush to make it long lasting,” she tells us. It’s a great tip for adding a touch more colour without disrupting your existing blush as you head into the evening.

Charlotte Tilbury

K.I.S.S.I.N.G Refillable Lipstick, £30.00

The Lipstick
If all other products are forgotten, your lipstick is the one product Ruby tells us to prioritise. “If you’re planning to eat and drink throughout the course of the day, your lipstick will need some topping up,” says Hammer. “To keep your lipstick fresh, have the same product you used in the morning on hand, and you might also need a little Q-tip so every so often, you can just wipe off here and there,” she adds.

Milk Makeup

Kush Waterproof Mascara, £26.00

The Waterproof Mascara
“It’s probably going to be a very long day, so you do need to think about something that’s going to last and make you look good for the rest of your wedding day,” says Ruby. “Also, you might cry, and in that case, you need waterproof stuff. Waterproof mascara and liner are essential,” she adds. Having tried and tested this formula, we can promise wholeheartedly that it will not budge - no matter how many tears of joy you shed.

Charlotte Tilbury

Airbrush Flawless Setting Spray, £20.00

The Setting Spray
“Setting sprays smell nice, they reinvigorate your skin, and they sort of awaken you and give you a lift,” says Ruby. “I would say it’s more important to get your base (primer foundation and concealer) right, and then the setting spray is just a misting at the end to perk you up as the day goes on. For those with dry skin, I’d recommend a very refreshing light mist,” she tells us.
