What's The Difference Between Rare Beauty’s New Highlighter and The Positive Light Luminizer?

From the get-go Rare Beauty, the makeup brand launched by the multi-faceted Selena Gomez, has proven to be much more than another celebrity beauty line and TikTok moment. From gorgeous formulas, inclusive shades and, ultimately, a celebration of people’s individuality to the authentic focus on mental wellbeing, Rare Beauty has come to take up an honourable spot in our makeup bags.

So, the excitement is very, very real when a new Rare Beauty product lands – especially when it’s peak party season and said product is a glow-giving highlighter. Fans of Selena’s brand might be wondering if the new Positive Light Silky Touch Highlighter is necessary given the continued success of the Rare Beauty’s Positive Light Liquid Luminizer, which covers all our illuminating needs. Can it get any better than the OG viral highlighter?

The vital difference between the Rare Beauty Positive Light Liquid Luminizer and Positive Light Silky Touch Highlighter – the former is liquid, and the latter is a powder formula. Not sure which one would work best for you? I tried and tested both to help you decide (obviously there’s no judgement if you intend to have both).

As a proud highlighter aficionado, I was as intrigued as I was excited about Rare Beauty’s new highlighter and I particularly liked the charming compact case.

Upon the first application, I was impressed with the pigment payoff and radiance. Only a few brush strokes are needed to achieve a lit-from-within glow that, given its pigment, looks perfectly understated. This is a highlighter for those who like a delicate touch of sparkle. And while it does have a slight glitter effect, it’s beautifully subtle and barely noticeable on the skin. With four flexible shades – Enlighten, Flaunt, Exhilarate and Mesmerize, it’s a great powder option for many a skin tone.

As for the duration? I have found myself reapplying it throughout the day – but powder highlighter is usually one of those products that requires a touch-up on my oily-combination skin, and I didn’t need to apply it more than twice.

I've swatched the Rare Beauty Positive Light Silky Touch Highlighter in Exhilarate (gold tone on your right) Liquid Luminizer in Enchant (pinky tone on your left), so you can see the finish of each. Both formulas can be built up for a stronger look.

There’s not much to say about this highlighter that hasn’t been said already – it’s an absolute must-have for glow seekers. Liquid highlighters have been my go-to for years – and this one, formulated with light-catching pearls, is one of the best liquid formulas out there. Long-lasting, available in eight shades and so, so radiant, it feels like the definition of a second-skin finish. And, of course, mixing it with Rare Beauty’s Soft Pinch Liquid Blush is the most joy-sparking thing – it’s truly a dewy glow like no other.

A little goes a long way with this liquid highlighter, which comes with an applicator. I personally find it easiest to apply a few dabs on my hand first and then pat it lightly on my cheekbones with my fingers or a Beautyblender The Original Beauty Blender, € 20,00. I do the same when mixing it with the Liquid Blush, and make sure to work with the mix quite quickly.

Both of these highlighters have serious staying power and don’t crease or settle on fine lines (phew). Rare Beauty Silky Touch Highlighter, € 27,00 may be a powder highlighter, but this formula sits beautifully on skin and comes close to a second-skin finish. Personally, I love the versatility that comes with Liquid Luminizer - being able to mix it with a blusher or foundation is priceless.

If you’re a firm believer that the limit does not exist when it comes to glowing, why not follow my lead and have these highlighters join forces? For a brilliantly bold effect, use the Liquid Luminizer and maximise it with the Silky Touch – it’ll not only amp up the radiance factor, but also last longer if you’re perhaps planning a desk to disco moment. Trust me, it’s a glow made in heaven.

While it’s easy to get swept up in the blusher and highlighter hype, there are plenty of other Rare Beauty products we love. The Rare Beauty Positive Light Tinted Moisturiser, € 34,00, available in 24 shades, offers excellent coverage and a natural, skin-loving finish. A fan of cream blush? We love carrying the Rare Beauty Stay Vulnerable Melting Blush, € 25,00 everywhere we go. For an understated lip that feels beautifully comforting on the lips, you’ll love the choice of shades within the Rare Beauty Kind Words Lipstick, € 23,00 – they come with matching lip liners too. And to lock in your makeup – and feel refreshed throughout the day – Rare Beauty Always An Optimist 4-in-1 Mist, € 16,00 is a saviour. They call it a #RareRoutine for a reason…
