Frequently asked questions about deodorants

Your deodorant’s primary purpose is to control or remove unwanted body odour in areas that are prone to sweating, like the under arms. They work by either masking the area with fragrance, reducing the bacteria that causes odour, or using antiperspirant formulas that reduce sweat production.

It depends on what you are looking for. An anti-perspirant formula like the Fresh Sugar Roll-On Deodorant Antiperspirant stops sweat production. Deodorising formulas without antiperspirant like Aesop’s Deodorant neutralise bacteria in sweat to stop odour and keep you smelling fresh all day.

Deodorants can be found in sticks, sprays and roll ons, each of which offer a different application method to suit your preference. Roll-ons like Susanne Kaufmann Deodorant Roll-on are often liquid or gels that offer precise application to underarms. Stick formulas, including Sol de Janeiro Rio Deo Deodorant Cheirosa 62, often have a solid, waxy texture to reduce mess and offer nourishment. Sprays offer an instant refresh dispensing a light mist.

Body odour is produced when sweat interacts with bacteria on the skin. The best deodorising formulas will remove bacteria, neutralise or mask the scent. We love Phlur’s Father Figure Deodorant, which targets odour by using salicylic acid to neutralise bacteria, zinc to absorb odour and a crisp, green scent for the ultimate refresh.

Antiperspirant formulas (those that reduce sweating) are most likely formulated with aluminium salts. These work by blocking sweat ducts to the amount of sweat that is produced. Aluminium can irritate the skin, so some may find a natural formula that is aluminium-free suits them best.
