I’m nervous about blusher in case I apply too much – what’s the secret?

“Use a really soft brush and pick up a tiny amount at a time. I like to swirl my brush into the palm of my hand before applying it to cheeks as it takes off any excess really effectively. Then just build it up until you’re happy.”

Where should I apply my blusher?

“Applying blusher to the apples of your cheeks and then pulling it down a little towards your jawline will give you the most natural looking flush.”

How do I know what shade will suit my skin tone?

“As a general rule deeper skin tones suit oranges and reds and lighter skin tones suit pinks and nudes. If you have dark skin and want to wear pink, of course you can, just go for a deeper toned pink.”

What’s so great about these kind of ultra-workable pigments?

“They’re like jewels for the eyes, which I love, plus the texture is just so rich and shiny. They give you that gorgeous glowy, wet-look finish but with a dry shadow formula.”

Should I use fingers or a brush for this kind of product?

“Use your fingers unless you want a really molten finish, in which case work onto the back of your hand first and mix with a setting spray before applying to your lids.”

What’s a great way of wearing this kind of statement eye?

“For day time something like a nude lip is perfect, but for night throw on a bold lip with it for extra drama. Something in a velvet matte texture will provide a really beautiful contrast.”

Do metallic shades suit every age and skin tone?

“Yes, you just have to take ownership of the look on yourself. If you are nervous about exaggerating fine lines then think about placement; the middle of the eye is usually the smoothest area so press the colour on here for a flattering pop of metal.”

I’m bored of black, what colour should I try?

“If you have light eyes you can wear anything with a warm undertone like reds, browns and coppers, and if you have dark eyes then try jewel tones like emerald greens, ruby reds and sapphire blues.”

Is liquid liner the best medium to try for this look?

“Not necessarily. In fact I always etch the shape of liner on first with a pencil and then trace over it with a liquid formula; it’s easier to remove pencil if you make mistakes. My favourite way to apply liner is to mix an eye shadow with a little water to form a paste and apply it with a skinny liner brush. It gives you much more versatility when it comes to texture density and shade range.”

How much is enough when it comes to this look?

“Bold lashes are supposed to be bold so go with it. Coat on as many layers as you want and stop when you feel like you’re done.”

What else can I wear with this look?

“Keep it simple. The eyes can take a little something else – maybe a slick of liner – but keep the rest of the face flawless and fresh.”

How can I make this look work for day time?

“Control the shape of your lashes with your mascara. Keep the outer corners the focus and force the shape of them out as you’re applying your product to get a real fan shape. It’s gives a pretty, less obviously dramatic effect that’s perfect for day time.”

Can I still wear dark colours if I’ve got thin lips?

“We all have two lip lines, one inner one that’s flesh coloured and one that’s pale like a halo and sits just outside our natural lip line. If you have thinner lips then just make sure you apply colour right up to this outer line to give the illusion of fullness.”

I’m nervous about wearing deeper shades, what’s an easy way to get into the look?

“You either need to just go for it and get used to the colour on your face, or buy a shade you love, no matter how dark, and mix it with your favourite nude. Wearing it like this at first then building up and changing the ratio of dark to light as you go is a slow and steady way into the look.”

Should I apply lipstick straight from the bullet or with a brush?

“Both. I apply lipstick straight from the bullet first and then I use a brush for the edges; it’s faster in terms of application and gives you precision. Use the brush at the end to move the colour out into the outer corners and into every crease.”

What’s your favourite texture for statement lips?

“I like a matte velvet. It feels fresh and modern, plus having something that’s fully pigmented enables you to play and be adventurous and create your own shade if you want to.”

What’s the secret to prepping skin for a flawless look like this?

“Exfoliating to ensure you don’t have any patches of dryness; you can hydrate your skin forever but if it’s dry it’ll get in the way of flawless makeup. Depending on your skin type go as gentle as you need to with the kind of exfoliator you choose.”

If I don’t have great skin to start with, Can I still do this look?

“You absolutely can but you need to treat and address any areas of concern first. When it comes to product, apply your favourite tinted moisturiser all over first and then use a dense concealer everywhere else for a little more coverage.”

What’s your favourite kind of base to use for a glowing skin finish?

“I love to use a rich concealer, something that’s just creamy and emollient and will melt into skin. If you have oily skin you can still use a formula like this, just use less and don’t apply it on your t-zone.”

What texture highlight is good to use here?

“Anything that’s creamy and stays wet-looking throughout the day. Pat your chosen product on with your fingertips or sweep on with a soft brush. Just bear in mind that with each layer of product you apply to your face, you should apply slightly less pressure each time. So with highlighter as a final step you should apply it with a really light touch for best effect.”
