Your Questions, Answered

You can essentially apply concealer anywhere on your complexion that you may feel needs a little extra coverage, such as dark circles, blemishes, dark spots or any areas with hyperpigmentation. Additionally, you can add brightness and create a lifted look by applying concealer to the high points of your face – such as your cheekbones, the bridge of your nose, or the middle of the forehead.

How you opt to apply your concealer is down to personal preference. With concealers that feature a doe-foot applicator, such as the bestselling NARS’ concealer or Hourglass concealer, you can apply the product directly onto the complexion and blend it out with your fingertips, a brush or sponge. With formulas like Glossier’s Stretch Concealer, you’ll likely find it easy to simply use your fingertips to warm the product and press it into the skin.

Generally, you may find it easier to apply your concealer after your foundation, as this can prevent overapplication and a cakey appearance. However, there are makeup techniques that involve applying both your concealer and contour products before foundation – allowing for a smoother, more even finish.

Just like foundation, when it comes to finding the right shade of concealer, you’ll want to establish whether your skin tone is fair, light, medium or deep, and if your skin’s undertone is cool, warm, neutral, etc. If you specifically want to target dark circles, consider finding a shade that’s 1 to 3 shades lighter than your foundation. For uniform coverage, and concealing acne and dark spots, choose a concealer that matches your foundation.
