Charlotte Tilbury vs. NARS: Which Is Better For You?

Charlotte Tilbury vs. NARS: Which Is Better For You?
Charlotte Tilbury and NARS are two of the world’s greatest makeup brands. Both are founded by extraordinary makeup artists who have worked backstage at the shows and the red carpet, as well as on countless blockbuster campaigns over the years. It’s only natural that customers ask again, and again which brand does the best foundation. With beauty assistant, Khanya Pama on team NARS and beauty editor, Victoria Hall flying the flag for Charlotte Tilbury, we’ve created a cheat sheet for anyone who's keen to explore both brands and find the best foundation for them…

Why NARS Foundations Are The Best

Behind the brand: NARS is a heavyweight in the beauty industry and rightfully so. From the lipsticks to the palettes, every product lives up to the hype and the brand has endorsements from the biggest names, including supermodel Naomi Campbell who chose NARS to be her first beauty campaign in her thirty-year career.

The top line: When people think of NARS, they tend to think of the brand’s foundations. Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation and Sheer Glow are cult classics. While the former caters for the oily to combination girls, the latter offers coverage for those with normal to dry skin. Full disclosure, I’m a Sheer Glow fan, and when I say fan, I mean I rarely leave the house without using it.

Which NARS foundation for you? If you’re looking for a long-lasting formula that will see you through a full day at the office or an event that will stretch long into the night, Nars Natural Radiant Longwear Foundation, £41 is the one for you. It offers medium to deep, buildable coverage for a truly radiant, airbrushed look. Plus, it promises 16-hour wear, fade resistance, and transfer resistance, so it’s handy if you’re whipping a face mask on and off on your commute.

Nars Sheer Glow Foundation, £39, as the name suggests, gives you a natural glow. While it has quite (ironically) a thick consistency, the texture glides easily across your skin to give you a sheer to medium coverage. Sheer Glow helps achieve a natural finish by evening out the skin tone and keeping you looking fresh all day. The formula includes glycerin to lock-in hydration and turmeric extract to boost your radiance, so it’s ideal for drier skin types looking for a base with benefits.

Why Charlotte Tilbury Foundations Are The Best

Behind the brand: Charlotte Tilbury is a makeup doyenne. What she doesn’t know about makeup isn’t worth knowing and her products live up to the highest expectations. Since launching her namesake brand in 2013, Charlotte has made everything from creating a smoky eye to perfecting your red lip effortlessly easy.

The top line: If you’re looking for your dream skin in bottle, you need a Charlotte Tilbury foundation in your makeup bag. While the brand has a primer, most of the foundations are lazy-girl-friendly and can be applied directly onto skin using clean fingers, a brush or a sponge without the need for prepping and priming.

Which Charlotte Tilbury foundation for you? Charlotte Tilbury Airbrush Flawless Foundation, £39 is a lightweight, full coverage, matte finish foundation. It’s the formula to go for if you want that perfected, filter-worthy finish without looking like you’re wearing 80 layers of foundation. It’s long-lasting, sweat-proof and transfer-proof and it has AirCool technology that helps to cool and soothe skin, making it ideal for anyone with dry or slightly sensitive skin.

If, like me, you like the lightest of textures and plenty of radiance to disguise any hint of tiredness, look to Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter, £39. It’s like NARS Sheer Glow in that it offers sheer to medium coverage, boosts your glow and is packed full of skincare ingredients, but, for me, the finish is just a little bit more radiant. It’s a primer, foundation and highlighter all-in-one.

The Verdict

We know we say this every time, but this is a very tough call as both brands offer excellent foundations. For those who love the ritual of applying and experimenting with makeup and want a pro-like experience, we’d point you in the direction of NARS. If you’re looking for a fool-proof formula that requires zero skill, start with Charlotte Tilbury. If you’re here for a direct comparison between NARS Sheer Glow and Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Filter, we apologise, we can’t call it. Both provide a sheerer finish that evens out your skin tone and leaves you with a gorgeous glow. We recommend you go for the one that offers the best shade for you.
