The beauty of vitamin C is that all ages and skin types can use it. “The trick is to choose a vitamin C product with a texture matched to your skin type,” says Paula Begoun, skin expert and founder of Paula’s Choice skincare. “Oily to combination skin should opt for a fluid, while drier skin types should look to lotions or creams.” 

As with any active ingredient, when you introduce vitamin C into your skincare, start with a lower concentration and use it once or twice a week. Avoid using retinol or AHAs at the same time too.

What’s The Best Form Of Vitamin C To Use?

Like retinol, vitamin C comes in multiple forms including sodium ascorbic phosphate, ascorbic palmitate and retinyl ascorbate. L-ascorbic acid is the strongest form of vitamin C and is generally favoured by dermatologists and skincare experts as it’s the most researched. Where Does Vitamin C Fit Into My Routine?

In terms of where to slot it into your routine, “it depends on the product’s texture containing vitamin C,” says Paula. “The general rule is to start with cleansing, toning and your leave-on exfoliant containing either AHA (such as glycolic or lactic acid) or BHA (salicylic acid). Then you follow with your treatment products, boosters, and/or moisturiser based on their texture.” Start with the lightest texture and work your way up. “The only exception to this is during the day, the last product you apply is always sunscreen,” adds Paula.
