Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz On Lazy Weekends

Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz On Lazy Weekends
They might be the power couple behind one of the most successful US beauty brands, Malin + Goetz, and spend a lot of time travelling to their many apothecaries in New York, London, Hong Kong and beyond, but Matthew Malin and Andrew Goetz still find the time to switch-off together at the weekend. From theatrical coffee blending and lazy Sunday mornings to low-key body routines and memorable beauty tips.

On Weekends In The Country…

Matthew: We are usually at our weekend place in Hudson NY and it is pretty laid back and lazy.

Andrew: We’re very religious about heading up to the country on the weekends as it’s much more conducive to unwinding. The stress usually melts away very quickly once we get upstate. I usually kickoff the weekend with a Negroni and dinner with friends. Once I’ve reached that point the week is just a fond memory.

On Lazy Sunday Mornings…

Andrew: I really like a quiet Sunday.  I don’t exercise and absolve myself from trying to think about work. Instead I’ll get up early and run into town to get the Sunday New York Times and Financial Times while Matthew is making the coffee – an oddly elaborate process that is best not observed.

Matthew: If we are up for it, we will head into town for brunch and wander around the shops on Warren Street for the afternoon.  If the weather is nice, we will hot tail it back home to the garden. We also try to touch base with our parents and sisters and some friends on the phone – yes, very old fashioned indeed.

On Mr. Greenberg…

Andrew: One of the first things I do is the morning is take our pug, Mr. Greenberg for a short walk and feed him. Matthew is not a big breakfast person – unlike Mr. Greenberg; but I like to make a soft boiled egg or some porridge to eat while I’m reading the papers if we’re not going for brunch.

On Low Maintenance Bodycare Routine…

Andrew: I have to admit I don’t often use a body scrub, which I really ought to as I tend to be dry.

Matthew: I don't use a body scrub or body moisturiser. Like many men, I have some body hair, do not find that my skin is dry, and don’t like my hair to tangle from the product.  However, I do often use both our Peppermint Body Scrub and Vitamin B5 Body Moisturizer on my hands and feet when I need to.

On The Beauty Tip That’s Stayed With Them...

Andrew: Use a glycolic pad. Since I’m no longer a spring chicken, this is indeed a great tip.

Matthew: Keep it simple; less is more. When I met Andrew’s grandmother 25 years ago, she had beautiful skin and told me she washed every day with Cold Cream, moisturised and stayed out of the sun.

On Renovating Homes…

Andrew: The lesson I’ve learnt over the years is not only is less more, it’s better.

Matthew: One thing Andrew and I have agreed on with each of our renovations is that if you are going to spend the money, then spend it the way you want it. We don’t renovate for resale value but for how we want to live. The next home-owner will redo it anyway.

On Bedtime Routines…

Andrew: I try to get into bed around midnight.  I really like to read before I go to bed, if not finish my book as it helps me fall asleep.

Matthew: I am usually in bed by 11:30 after a little background television. I can’t read before bed because I fall asleep very quickly!  Beforehand, my main routine is washing my face with Sarah Chapman’s Cleansing Mitts and our Grapefruit Cleanser before using the Replenishing Face Serum and Vitamin E Face Moisturizer.

On Books To Read...

Andrew: I’m always reading two or three books at a time. I’ve just finished “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr, which I really enjoyed.

Matthew: I just finished The Goldfinch upon Andrew’s recommendation. I loved it! I’m planning to read Donna Tart’s The Secret History next.

On Monday Morning Alarms...

Matthew: I don't use an alarm, but generally I’m awake around 7am. I’ll walk Mr. Greenberg, have a coffee and answer any emails.

Andrew: I’m up either really early – too early, and don’t want to be, or if I’m lucky, I’m able to sleep until 6:30am or 7pm.  At that point it’s more of a roll out of bed.
