Why Escentric Molecules 01 And Its Evolutions Are True Fragrance Icons

Escentric Molecules Molecule 01 review | Space NK
What makes a fragrance iconic? Most of the classics today were ground-breaking when they first launched – from blending aldehydes with floral notes to clean, citrusy notes that break gender barriers. When it launched in 2006, Escentric Molecules Molecule 01 turned the traditional composition of a fragrance on its head and remains a firm favourite today, cementing its label as a modern classic.

Everything You Need To Know About Molecule 01 And Its Evolutions

Escentric Molecules

Molecule 01 Eau de Toilette, £85.00

The Original

While most fragrances are composed of top, middle and base notes, Molecule 01 is built entirely around just one note: Iso E Super. This single note that melts into the skin to create a lightweight, woody, almost intangible musk. Interestingly, Iso E Super changes depending on your skin's temperature and chemistry, which makes it smell different on everyone.

It’s this quality that has led many to consider Molecule 01 the original skin scent. As founder Geza Schoen explains, “Molecule 01 is the ultimate linear, most simplistically possible solution to smell sophisticated and NOT like a conventional fragrance as we know it.” Its effect is subtle but powerful, with what he describes as a “sheer olfactory presence” that is “very alluring, yet not overpowering; it's basically subtlety meets sophistication.”

The M+ Range

Building on the success of Molecule 01, the M+ range pairs Iso E Super with one carefully selected note to create new interpretations of the original. As founder Geza Schoen explains, “Molecule + is for fans of M01 who want one more aspect”. Here are some of our favourites...

M+ Champaca, £135.00

The latest, most unexpected evolution, Molecule 01 + Champaca introduces a rich floral dimension to the minimalist base. As founder Geza Schoen explains, "Champaca has notes of orange blossom, jasmine, and tea, all in one singular natural product," adding that "the overall complexity of the absolute is outstanding." On the skin, these facets unfold gradually, with the soft, skin-like quality of Iso E Super meeting the opulence of the Indian bloom to create a striking contrast that feels both vibrant and grounded.

M+ Guaiac Wood Eau de Toilette, £135.00

One of the more grounded interpretations, Molecule 01 + Guaiac Wood, introduces a smoky depth to the minimalist base. As founder Geza Schoen describes it, the scent is reminiscent of "a sip of whisky and cuddling around the fireplace in winter," giving it a distinctly cosy, cocooning feel. Guaiac wood is derived from the heartwood of the palo santo tree, offering a deeper, more enveloping scent than the original. It is no surprise this one is a natural choice for evening wear or the cooler months.

What Does Escentric Molecules Molecule 01 Actually Smell Like?

When you first spritz Molecule 01 you’re hit with a slightly synthetic, alcohol waft and slowly the warmth of cedarwood comes through. The dry down has a clean woody and musky scent to it. There’s a subtly to this Escentric Molecules perfume. The synthetic molecule has a lightweight woody, musky effect on fragrances and is regularly used. Juliette Has A Gun Sunny Side Up Eau de Parfum, £25.00 and D.S. & DURGA I Don’t Know What, £155.00 both feature it to achieve that addictive velvety finish.

How Long Does Escentric Molecules 01 Last For?

Just like other skin scents, Molecule 01 can be worn on its own or layered with your signature perfume or scented body lotion, which makes it a very versatile scent to have in your fragrance wardrobe..

Despite its lightness, Escentric Molecules Molecule 01 has good staying power, and you can expect it to linger for at least six-to-seven hours. However, it’s worth noting that the scent does fade over this time. Its versatility means it can bolster your current fragrances too.

Is Escentric Molecules Molecule 01 For You?

Unlike your usual floral perfumes or punchy gourmand scents, this is a very minimalist fragrance and as a result, it’s not for everyone. However, its versatility does mean you shouldn’t overlook it completely. The clean, musky, woodiness is surprisingly alluring and Escentric Molecules Molecule 01 is definitely worth exploring if you tend to like sandalwood perfumes.
