How often do you switch up your fragrance? If you’ve been wearing the same scent throughout lockdown, or forgone fragrance entirely, you might be tempted to test the waters with something new. Where better to start than Byredo. The iconic Swedish brand is renowned for its playful yet sophisticated take on classic fragrance notes.

While there isn’t a smell-o-vision app yet, we asked fragrance expert and beauty writer Alice du Parcq for her tricks for shopping for a fragrance online. “First of all, look at what you have already at home. Is there a common theme in what you’re smelling? Are they all light florals, rich spice bombs, splashy colognes? Have a look online what each fragrance contains, and you’ll probably see a few of the same ingredients pop up,” says Alice.

When you’re browsing online don’t be put off if you see notes that you don’t love. “If it’s not mentioned in the main description of the scent it’s probably just there to bring depth and balance to the overall recipe,” says Alice.

To get you started we’ve rounded up a few of our favourites from Byredo and created a handy shopping guide…

If You Like Uplifting Rose Scents…

Try: Byredo Lil Fleur Eau de Parfum

The latest offering from the brand has a nostalgic feel to it. Centred around damascus rose, it is peppered with notes that played starring roles in some of our favourite teenage scents, including uplifting tangerine and cassis, as well as vanilla. With hints of saffron and leather notes, it is a far cry from classic jammy, rose scents. If you want to take a walk down memory lane, this is definitely the most tasteful, sophisticated route to take.

If You Like Light, Fresh Scents…

Try: Byredo Gypsy Water Eau de Parfum

This is Byredo’s signature scent and it has a loyal celebrity following (both Rosie Huntington Whiteley and Sienna Miller have revealed they wear it). Immediately after spritzing you’re hit with light, zesty notes of lemon and bergamot before the scent dries down and the woody pine notes come through. The result is a clean, fresh and incredibly wearable scent.

If You Like Juicy, Citrus Scents…

Try: Byredo Sundazed Eau de Parfum

Unofficially called ‘summer in a bottle’, this perfume was made for those who love the refreshing, zingy scent of lemons and mandarins intertwined with sun-drenched jasmine. While the addition of cotton candy gives this citrus scent a dose of sweetness, it is by no means cloying thanks to the addition of neroli which helps to rebalance the freshness.

If You Like Powdery, Parma Violet-Esque Scents…

Try: Byredo Unnamed Eau de Parfum

Another incredibly popular scent (and not just because you can name it yourself), this powdery blend of iris and violets is reminiscent of the childhood sweets. Yet, the clever burst of gin notes and lingering woody notes prevent this fragrance from feeling old fashioned or heavy. This is the kind of perfume that will have people asking what you’re wearing.

If You Like Sophisticated, Vetiver Scents…

Try: Byredo Bal D’Afrique Eau de Parfum

We would be doing Bal D’Afrique a disservice by simply calling it a woody, floral fragrance. Inspired by Paris in the 1920s and the city’s infatuation with Africa, this perfume is a rich, sophisticated mix of spicy, floral and woody notes. While you can expect a blend of fresh lemons, blooming marigolds and woody vetiver with your first sniff, this fragrance leaves a warming scent of amber and powdery musk and violet in its wake. It is a fragrance wardrobe must-have if you love vetiver.

If You Like Creamy, Musk Scents…

Try: Byredo Velvet Haze Eau de Parfum

While some get a whiff of creamy coconut, for others this is reminiscent of fresh laundry. Inspired by the heady aromas of the swinging 1960s, Velvet Haze is a modern take on classic musk fragrances. Carefully balanced with hibiscus, tuberose and coconut, the musk and patchouli melt into your skin to offer a lighter, more wearable take on a classic fragrance.

If You Like Clean, Floral Scents…

Try: Byredo La Tulipe Eau de Parfum

Fresh, clean, feminine and floral are the four words that sum up this perfume perfectly. Despite its name, this scent smells like a bouquet of freesias with hints of tulips coming through and a soft musk as it dries down. Overall, this is a beautiful, delicate floral scent that feels fresh and clean, rather than heavy or powdery.
