The Experts' Skincare Mantras For 2025
It’s a New Year which means new skin goals and plenty of incoming skincare trends for 2025. From the hottest ingredient to the treatments to try, here’s what some of the UK’s top dermatologists, formulators and skincare experts are predicting we’ll be using and trying over the next 12 months…
Work on your wellness routine
We all know stress can impact your skin – the more stressed you are, the more cortisol soars through your body and the more inflammation is caused, read: spots, rosacea and dryness. “When you’re living well, it shows in a glowing complexion but also by doing things like relaxing in the bath with beautiful aromatics that calm your nervous system you’ll sleep better, allow your skin to repair overnight and you’ll wake up glowing,” says Noelle Garbiel, co-founder of Elemis.
Add in strength-building skincare
With savvy customers keen to boost their skin barrier health, Daniel Isaacs, chief product officer and founding partner of Medik8 says that: “scientific evidence and ingredient led formulations will become mainstream.” Citing ‘miniproteins’, that penetrate deep into the skin to reach their target cells as the next generation of skincare technology; ‘photo exosomes’ as an emerging trend in skin-rejuvenation thanks to their signalling molecules like peptides, nutrients and other bioactives that send messages to cells to repair the skin and ‘Acetyl Zingerone’ as the new antioxidant we’ll all want in our formulas. “Derived from ginger, this powerful antioxidant is labelled an ‘omni’ antioxidant due to its remarkable ability to defend against multiple types of free radicals. Expect to see it in vitamin C formulas due to its environmental protector properties.”
Continue your double cleansing ritual
Skincare legend and founder of Skin Rocks, says her mantra never changes. “Keep it simple, know what works and stick to what gets results. For me that’s retinoids, acids and obviously the cornerstone of every skincare routine, an effective double cleanse.”
Look for combination formulas
Rather than the waves of single ingredient products we’ve seen, Dr Ahmed El Muntasar, GP and award-winning aesthetician says that we’re now moving towards multi-tasking products that give us more: “We have so much to do on a day-to-day basis that we want our skincare products to do more than one thing and work smarter, not harder. That’s why I imagine we’ll see combinations of retinoids, glycolic acid, lactic acid and gentle exfoliating acids coming through.”
Choose longevity
Rather than ‘anti-ageing’ the shift has moved to healthy ageing with formulas and practices that keep our cells ticking over in optimum condition. One ingredient that will have a resurgence is glutathione – a powerful antioxidant that is produced by the body but diminishes with time. “Due to its known efficacy and benefits, particularly in relation to inflammation, skin brightening and anti-ageing qualities, it’s been discovered that when combined with other brightening agents like Vitamin C, kojic acid or niacinamide, its efficacy in treating uneven skin tone and pigmentation is increased,” says Dr Harpal Bains, longevity doctor. As well as its inclusion in products, Dr Harpal flags that it will be a popular addition in IV drips too.
Opt for an In + On approach
What you do physically to your skin is just as important as what goes into your skin admits Joanna Ellner, founder of REOME skincare. “For me, beautiful healthy skin, is the result of a balanced approach between the right ingredients fed into the skin, and regular movement, or massage on top of the skin. One can’t exist without the other in the pursuit of exceptionally radiant, plump skin. The movement, for me, is best wielded via daily post-shower gua sha; upward movements around the under-eye and cheekbones, and from the chin, up each side of the masseter (jaw) - this works wonders for promoting blood flow, detoxifying the lymphatic system and pulling your bone structure into place. Only then, with both movement and ingredients combined, will you see your skin at its most impeccable self.”
