Personalising Your Skin Routine

Personalising Your Skin Routine
Plenty of dermatologists will tell you that a consistent skincare routine is the backbone to healthy skin. But everyone’s skin is different and what works for you won’t necessarily work for your sister or best friend. While we all know that cleansing is important and SPF is non-negotiable, there are some decisions that are more personal to your skin type and lifestyle. Here’s our step-by-step guide to help you personalise your skincare routine. First and foremost, we have some questions for you…

What’s Your Skin Type?

Identifying your skin type is the first step in personalising your skincare routine. Is your skin dry, oily, combination or sensitive? Take a close look at your skin after cleansing and before you apply any product (ideally leave it 30 minutes).

Oily skin is prone to breakouts and is likely to suffer from that pesky 4pm shine while in contrast dry skin may feel uncomfortable, tight or even look flaky. Combination skin has characteristics of both oiliness and dryness, and if redness, inflammation and skin that’s highly reactive sounds like you, it’s likely you’re a sensitive type. Still not sure? Take a deeper dive with our guide, here.

What’s Your Main Skin Concern?

Whether you want to dial up your radiance, banish blemishes or unify uneven tone, there is a product to help. For most of us, our skin reacts to seasonal changes such as the weather and environmental factors including stress, diet and pollution. As a result, your primary skin concern is likely to change several times during the course of a year. For this reason, it’s a good idea to refresh and reset your routine seasonally.

Step 1: Cleanser

When it comes to cleansing, there myriad formulas to suit every skin type from oils and balms to foaming, milky creams. For dry skin sufferers, Elemis Pro-Collagen Cleansing Balm, £39.20 cleans without stripping skin, instead leaving it feeling dewy and plump. Sensitive types may like Kate Somerville Goat Milk Moisturizing Cleanser, £30.40 which contains goat milk proteins to soothe and calm, while those with oily skin will swear by Murad AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser, £36.80 thanks to the effective blend of acids.

Step 2: Serum

Serums are one of the most effective ways to treat your skin and get to the root of targeted concerns, thanks to the higher concentrations of active ingredients which are able to penetrate deeply. Sunday Riley CEO 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum, £80.00 and Drunk Elephant C-Firma Fresh Day Serum, £56.00 are two of our bestselling vitamin C serums and both are exceptionally good for anyone looking to smooth fine lines and boost radiance. If retinol is your active ingredient of choice, invest in Skin Rocks Retinoid 1 - Vitamin A Face Serum, £52.00.

Hyaluronic acid and squalane are two fabulous ingredients for all skin types, especially dry skin. Niacinamide shouldn’t be overlooked, particularly if you have sensitive skin as it helps to strengthen your skin barrier.

Step 3: Moisturiser

Crucial for all skin types, including oily skin, a good moisturiser helps lock in hydration and protect the skin’s natural barrier. Two of our favourites include Charlotte Tilbury Charlotte's Magic Cream, £20.80, which is infused with hyaluronic acid, vitamin C and E, shea butter and rosehip oil, and Tatcha The Dewy Skin Cream, £19.20 which is packed full of Okinawa algae to hydrate and plump.

Step 4: Eye Cream

The skin surrounding your eyes is up to 40% thinner than on other areas of your face, which is why we recommend a cream or balm tailored to the delicate area. Fresh Rose Hydrating Eye Gel Cream, £29.60 combines cooling cucumber, rosewater and hyaluronic acid to pep up and illuminate the undereye area. If you suffer from puffiness, look out for stimulating caffeine-infused cream like to help smooth and de-puff.
