We Put Tatcha Milky Sunscreen SPF 50 To The Test

Tatcha the milky sunscreen SPF50 review | Space NK
If you speak to any dermatologist, they’ll tell you that rule number one for preventing premature ageing and dark spots is to implement an SPF into your daily AM routine. That said, finding one that you’ll never want to stop applying is the ultimate skincare hack. Enter, Tatcha’s new The Milky Sunscreen SPF 50.

Those already acquainted with Tatcha will know that its formulas are the pinnacle of luxury within a bathroom cabinet. Blending age-old Japanese botanicals with modern skincare science, the brand is founded on the principle of ritualising your routine, with each product designed to make daily skincare a mindful self-care moment. It’s latest suncare launch is no exception.

While Tatcha’s mineral The Silk Sunscreen SPF 50 has received rave reviews alongside fan favourites like the Dewy Skin Cream and The Rice Wash, the new Milky Sunscreen takes a different approach. Formulated with a chemical SPF formula, it delivers broad-spectrum protection without the tell-tale white cast, while delivering that signature Tatcha skincare glow.

We called on two Space NK skincare lovers to share their honest thoughts. But first, what are the main differences between the two Tatcha sunscreens?

What is the difference between the milky and the silk SPF?

While the much-loved The Silk Sunscreen SPF 50 by Tatcha offers mineral protection, the new milky formula offers chemical protection, which is often reported to be better for deeper tones wishing to avoid a white cast from their SPF.

The brand has also levelled up the skincare benefits by including Vitamin E and Japanese powerhouse ingredient Okinawa aloe to provide deep hydration and naturally help reduce the appearance of UV-induced damage.

Topline On Tatcha The Milky Sunscreen SPF50

As I am aware of how important it is to use SPF I prioritise daily wear. However, I need to be strategic on which products I use as there are lots on the market that leave a white cast or alter how my complexion makeup products appear. Typically, this means using a very lightweight cream or gel. The key is that they are invisible or tinted, if the shade is universal enough.

I’m a big fan of Tatcha’s The Water Cream and The Indigo Cleansing Balm, so it’s of no surprise that I loved the lightweight cream consistency of the new Milky SPF. The formula melted seamlessly into my skin and absorbed well. Also, having only a slight scent like this product does is preferable for me.

The pump-tube packaging felt both luxurious and travel friendly and the pump dispensed the perfect dose for one application, both of which are key for an SPF product.

I’m so pleased to say that this product didn’t leave a visible white cast on my skin yet managed to deliver a beautiful radiance that boosted the glow of my makeup without pilling.

This is now a valuable addition to my routine, and it’s worth investing in an SPF that you don’t avoid using because of how it smells, feels, or interferes with your makeup.

As excited as I was to have the opportunity to try this product, I have to admit I usually only apply SPF in winter when I remember to. However, like many of us, I do make it a daily step in my skin care routine in summer to prevent sunburn and redness and I usually opt for a non-tinted spray formula. Through the compelling influence of social media and my mum’s wisdom, I do understand how crucial SPF is in my skincare routine and feel like the time has come I find something I will be happy to use every morning.

I applied the Milky SPF on top of my beloved Luminous Dewy Skin Mist and the Tatcha Dewy Skin Cream. Rather than leaving a white cast and a strong sun cream scent that makes me reminisce my childhood, I was impressed by how quickly it absorbed and how luxurious it felt. I was also relieved to find that it didn’t pill under my makeup.

Thanks to the next-level hydration and instant luminosity it delivers (plus the aesthetic Tatcha purple packaging), I can proudly say I have found a sun protection product that I actually want to reach for, and it has now become a non-negotiable part of my routine.

Our Verdict On the Tatcha The Milky Sunscreen SPF50

If you’re looking for your next SPF for sun protection and to prevent the appearance of premature ageing, then look no further, as both of our Space NK HQ reviewers loved Tatcha’s new milky SPF.

THE PROS: Our reviewers found that this SPF left no white cast and absorbed quickly while providing hydration and luminosity, while still allowing makeup applied on top to look it’s best.

THE CONS: If you have oily skin, the added glow that this sunscreen provides may not be useful. Opting for the The Silk Sunscreen SPF 50 will help to minimise pores and reduce texture thanks to added Hyaluronic acid and niacinimide.
