Harlow On Her Everyday Skincare Routine

Harlow On Her Everyday Skincare Routine
When it comes to skincare, Harlow Monroe knows her stuff. As a leading model, she has access to some of the best beauty experts in the business, but Harlow’s also done her research and knows what works for her. Having transitioned seven years ago, she balanced hormonal changes and learnt to keep her acne-prone skin in check. We caught up with the star of the Your Beauty Space campaign to find out more about her routine and her top skincare tips…

From Maximalist To Minimalist

When it comes to my beauty routine, these days I would say I’m more of a beauty minimalist. For years I was definitely more of a maximalist kind of girl, but now I just want a beauty routine that’s simple and effective. Whether I’m getting ready for the day or for bed, I want to take my time and enjoy the experience. If I had a huge range of products, it would take me hours!

My Skincare Mantra

A few years ago I saw an aesthetician in Canada who told me to “treat your skin for what it needs now.” It took me awhile to fully understand what she meant, but basically our skin changes, so use the products your skin needs now, rather than what you think it might need in the future or what you should have used in the past.

Working With My Acne-Prone Skin

My skin has changed so much in the past few years, it’s the total opposite of what it used to be when I was still living in Canada. Moving to the UK a couple of years ago has made my skin oilier and more acne prone. It took me awhile to figure out how to deal with my new skin, but I finally got there. Salicylic acid, retinoids and benzoyl peroxide are the active ingredients I look out for as they’re good for fighting acne. Together they’ve really helped me clear up and maintain my skin. Sadly, these acne fighting superstars can be harsh and drying on the skin. Using low but effective percentages, really watching for signs of irritation, and using them in conjunction with skin strengthening ingredients, such as hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and ceramides, has allowed me to use these acne fighters with minimal to no irritation.

My Daily Routine

As my first step in the morning, I start with a gentle salicylic acid cleanser to help control oil, give my pores a good clean and remove any dead skin cell build-up. Next, I go in with my treatments and serums. Lately I've added a niacinamide serum into my routine, as it kind of addresses everything someone with oily, acne-prone skin deals with. From there, I apply my moisturiser, and finish off with an SPF.

In the evening it's basically the same but if I’m wearing makeup and sunscreen, I double cleanse. The first cleanse is with an oil cleanser to melt the makeup and SPF off, and then I use my salicylic cleanser. At night I also add in a prescription adapalene and benzol peroxide cream every other night.

The Skincare Brand Everyone Should Know

I feel like there are so many skincare brands that I love, and I'm drawn to more of the clean beauty brands, as I often want something that’s more natural without harmful ingredients. But one of my all-time favourites is Paula’s Choice. It has so many great products that work for a variety of skin types and concerns. The brand has something for everyone, it also helps that it was one of the OGs of clean, straightforward beauty.
