Why You Need To Try Erborian's New BB Concealer

Erborian Super BB Concealer review | Space NK
We should probably stop referring to no makeup makeup as a trend now. For a lot of us it’s become our staple look and we’re constantly on the lookout for lightweight, multitasking formulas that are jam-packed with skincare ingredients and can be applied on-the-go. As a result, skincare-makeup hybrids have become commonplace. Is it even worth trying a base formula if it doesn’t hydrate and protect your skin?

Erborian is renowned for its BB and CC creams – the brand’s CC Red Correct is one of our bestsellers and a must-have for those looking to ease redness and rosacea. The Super BB Cream Au Ginseng has also become a firm favourite with among Space NK customers as the lightweight formula hydrates and camouflages imperfections without looking or feeling cakey.

When you consider the number of skincare-makeup hybrids available even fans of the no make makeup look might question whether you need a BB concealer. So, when we heard that Erborian was launching a Super BB Concealer we decided to ask three team members to road test the formula and share their thoughts.

Concealer is very important due to my dark shadows. I usually look for a concealer which is brightening and does not crease throughout the day. Ideally something with a medium creamy texture (if it’s too creamy I find that it creases) and must be quite highlighting.

I applied the wand straight to my face, focusing on my under-eye area, and blended with my finger. It applied evenly and felt nice to apply as it has a soft texture with no mess and residue. I’d say it’s definitely good value for money as there is no wastage when applying. The texture is quite light and soft, which I liked as I hate makeup that feels heavy on your skin.

I reviewed Erborian’s ‘Caramel’ shade, and it worked for my skin tone, but personally I found it didn’t offer enough coverage. It may be better suited for a younger skin type, I’m 52 and require more coverage. In the before and after photos above I was wearing just the Erborian Super BB Concealer and a Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturiser.

If I had to guess I’d say it lasted for about six hours. While I wouldn’t use this every day, I’d be keen to pack it when I go on holiday as I tend to need less coverage and this concealer has SPF which is great when you’re in the sun.

Lizzie’s Erborian Super BB Concealer review

Skin tone: Fair with yellow undertones

Skin type: Combination

The shade: Erborian Super BB Concealer, £35.00 in Nude

I wear a tinted moisturiser, so I rely on a concealer for the areas where I need a little extra help. Reducing redness around my nose is the main role concealer plays in my makeup routine, so I look for something with good coverage but not too cake-y. I like a concealer which is slightly matte as I don't like to wear powder but have slightly oily skin.

I choose Erborian’s Nude shade, which was a good match for me as I’m fair with a warm undertone. If I was using this to brighten my under eyes, I’d look for something a little lighter, but for hiding redness it was perfect. I simply dotted the concealer on and blended with my fingers. I really liked the Super BB Concealer – it offered good coverage with a matte finish; I also liked the applicator as I often pump too much product out.

The formula had great lasting power – after a full day of wear there was some movement, but it wasn’t completely gone. However, while I will definitely finish the tube, I’m still on the fence about whether I will repurchase as I’m not sure it quite competes with my current favourite concealer.

I’m going to be honest; I didn’t have high expectations when this concealer landed on my desk. Like Lizzie, I like my concealer to work hard and provide medium to full coverage as I rarely wear foundation, so I assumed a BB cream inspired concealer wasn’t going to cut the mustard. I was wrong.

The coverage is light but buildable, so I applied two layers in areas that need a little more help. What surprised me the most was how smoothly Erborian’s Super BB Concealer went on – it didn’t streak under my eyes. I also liked the brightening effect it had on my dark circles (I’m not sure how obvious this shows in the before and after photos below).

In terms of longevity, the formula lasted as long as other concealers I’ve used. When I went out after work, I did have to reapply but I would do that with other concealers and the rest of my makeup.

Our Verdict On Erborian Super BB Concealer

While the Erborian Super BB Concealer, £35.00 was well received and there were definitely a lot of positives, this concealer won’t necessarily be for everyone. The wand applicator makes it super easy to apply and the reviewers proved that it’s effective both under your areas and around your nose. It’s a good choice if you want a formula with SPF and hydrating ingredients, but if you want more of a heavy duty, full coverage concealer it might not be the one for you.

We predict Erborian’s concealer will see a rise in popularity when the weather warms up and we all look for extra sun protection. With just five shades, this isn’t the most inclusive concealer so we hope Erborian expands this so everyone can enjoy the formula.

There’s also the super hydrating Erborian Red Pepper Pulp, £46.00 which has gel texture and absorbs quickly without leaving your skin feeling tacky.

Two to three drops warmed up in your hands and massaged onto skin every evening is all you need. We noticed our skin had a healthier looking glow after using this formula too.
